Course Objectives

This study programme introduces participants to basic notions of the Maltese legal system, studying its early developments in a historical context and its development in an environment always at odds with the civil law and common law traditions.

Whilst participants will be introduced to basic generic notions of law and the rationale behind it as the basic governing system of any modern nation, the local legal system will be analysed in light of several past and present influencing factors, including European Union law, which has transformed the face of various facets of local legislation.

Who should attend?

Anyone interested to understand the Maltese Legal System, law students and supporting staff in law firms or legal offices.

2 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better, and 3 Intermediate level subjects at Grade C or better. 1 of any of these subjects must be Maltese or English

OR

3 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better

OR

Mature/Adult Learning Student (must be 23 when course starts) subject to an interview by the Head of the Academy.

Participants will complete a self-assessment examination, where they will assess themselves on certain questions  at the start of the unit and compare their answers to the same questions at the end of the unit.

Participants must also complete 1 out of a choice of 3 assignment titles.

At the end of the study programme the learner will have been exposed to the following:

  1. An overview of the historical development of Maltese law
  2. The basics of the common law and civil law traditions
  3. The effect of common law and civil law on Maltese law
  4. The interplay between Malta’s latest colonisers and their effect on local legislation
  5. Sources of Maltese law
  6. The manner in which local law is categorised
  7. The nature of Acts, Regulations, Legal Notices and other legal publications
  8. Online portals which assist in legal research
Accreditations
The Malta Further and Higher Education Authority deems this Award to be at Level 5 in the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.
