Course Objective

The role and responsibilities of teachers who also serve as middle leaders in educational institutions are discussed in this course. It is aimed at educators who, after several years of experience teaching at various levels, want to apply for a middle leadership post in primary or secondary schools, as well as those who already hold one. At the end of the course the participants will be knowledgeable about various leadership styles that are used within the educational and school setting. They will also be able to determine relationship between middle leadership and distributed and shared leadership.

This course contributes towards the Accelerated Progression Scheme for educators as per the Sectoral Agreement signed in 2017.

Who should attend?

Educators

Educators already working in the educational sector.

Participants will be asked to submit 1 assignment.

At the end of the study programme the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the benefits of values-led leadership
  • Identify the need to coach their teams to show their leadership skills outside the classroom
  • Appreciate the importance of knowing the mission, goals and values of the institution they work for
  • Recognise that middle managers are not simply messengers but active participants in the decision-making process
  • Understand better the leadership styles being advocated within the Maltese education system.
  • Demonstrate how the work of middle leaders facilitates the work of senior leaders through teamwork
  • Create a plan to extend his/her leadership
  • Operate in an environment in which responsibilities are shared in a way that leadership becomes a process of doing things through other people
Accreditations
The Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA) deems this Award to be at Level 5 in the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.
