Course Objectives

In this study unit participants will be introduced to the regulation of the industry in Malta via the rigorous updating of legislation related to gaming in order to tally it up with the development of modern gaming, particularly online gaming. Due importance will also be given to the regulation of particular forms of gaming such as casinos, bingo, betting etc.

Participants will also have the opportunity to study the workings of the main authority taking care of the regulation of the gaming industry in Malta; the Malta Gaming Authority. Together with the above-mentioned legislation, participants will also look into ancillary laws which would apply to the industry, most especially anti-money laundering legislation, which has had a huge effect on the industry, most especially regarding internet-based gaming.

Who should attend?

Anyone interested to understand the Maltese Gaming Law, In-house lawyers, practicing lawyers, law students and employees in the gaming industry.

2 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better, and 3 Intermediate level subjects at Grade C or better. 1 of any of these subjects must be Maltese or English

OR

3 Advanced level subjects at Grade C or better

OR

Mature/Adult Learning Student (must be 23 when course starts) subject to an interview by the Head of the Academy.

Participants must complete 2 out of a choice of 4 assignment titles.

At the end of the study programme the learner will have been exposed to the following:

  1. The basic principles and features of gaming law, both Maltese, foreign and EU;
  2. A comprehensive study of all the types of gaming laws existing in Malta today and their provisions;
  3. Local and foreign case law dealing with the regulation of and disputes in the gaming industry;
  4. The distinction between land-based and online gaming;
  5. The history and role of the Malta Gaming Authority;
  6. The powers of the Authority regarding breaches of the law;
  7. The relation of anti-money laundering legislation to the gaming industry;
  8. Debate and discussion regarding the further regulation of the gaming industry on a local and international (or inter-state) level.
Accreditations
The Malta Further and Higher Education Authority deems this Award to be at Level 5 in the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.
